Yesterday was Tomas and my first week anniversary of being in Morocco and we FINALLY made it down to the beach. Before we got here I was ecstatic about the Mediterranean Sea being only “250 steps away.” What wasn’t spoken in that description was the fact that you need to be part mountain goat to navigate the trail that is close to our apartment. The other, more gradual approach starts closer to the Sanctuary a half mile away. Neither of these options was suitable for Tomas’s injured knee. However, yesterday we could no longer bear to be ”so close, yet so far away” from this extraordinary body of water and we braved the goat trail and found that it was not as treacherous as we had imagined.
Once down at sea level, we reveled in the healing powers of water and sand on our bare feet and at one point Tomas threw himself spread-eagle on the beach and declared himself “Home in Morocco.” This lead to him claiming his Moroccan name, “TAHIM” (Tomas, at home in Morocco.) We’re now all having fun with this, substituting the first letters of our names and making up our Moroccan names. So signing off today as
Aahim – Alia, at home in Morocco.
